STOURBRIDGE meningitis survivor Robert Parsons is all set for his charity 10K walk which he's organised as a way of thanking those who helped him on the road to recovery.

Brave Robert, who has been determined to try and find some kind of normality since the deadly disease claimed both his arms and legs and part of his nose when he was just 18, will be striding out on Sunday morning (July 17) for what he's called Bionic Bob's 10K Walk.

Rob, aged 34, from Norton, hopes by completing the sponsored walk to raise around £1,000 for two causes close to his heart - and to show his supporters how far he's come in the last 16 years.

Kind-hearted people in the community rallied to raise around £180,000 for a fund set up for him by his former employer Geoff Hill - which has helped him to buy prosthetic legs and a specially-adapted car.

Now, he wants to say thank you to all those who helped him by taking part in his own charity event which will raise money for Mary Stevens Hospice and Meningitis Now.

The charity trek will start and finish at the Geoff Hill Electrical Superstore in Amblecote where Rob worked as a van driver's mate before he was hit by meningitis.

Former Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Steve Waltho, is expected to be among those joining Rob on the walk which will take in the Stourbridge Canal and Mary Stevens Park as well as including a stop off at Mary Stevens Hospice.

Rob, who has recently undergone surgery to rebuild his nose - giving him a huge confidence boost, said: "I think it will take about two to two and a half hours. We did 8K last week and that went well."
