MASKED armed raiders stormed into a Stourbridge store last night and terrorised female staff before fleeing with the contents of the till.

The two men, wearing woollen masks over their faces and heads, struck at the Co-Operative store on the corner of Witton Street, Norton, at about 9.15pm last night (Sunday, September 4).

A 60-year-old female customer, who was withdrawing money from the cash dispenser in the shop, ran out as the pair began smashing at the till and hid behind a wall as she phoned 999.

The scene last night

The witness, who does not wish to be named, told the News: “These two burly men rushed in wearing black masks over their faces and holding big mallets or hammers.

“They said something to the shop assistant and then started bashing the till with the weapons.

“I left my card in the ATM and ran out and phoned the police from behind a wall nearby.

“Then the men came rushing out, got into a silver car parked just across the road and sped off.

“I gave the police the registration number of the car.”

She added: “The whole thing was quite surreal and very frightening.”

Two female assistants were in the store at the time but the witness did not know if any other customers were present.

It is not known how much was stolen.

Less than an hour later the masked raiders struck at the One Stop convenience store in Hungary Hill before car-jacking two women, including an 88-year-old.
