Chairman Pauline Roberts opened the meeting on May 20 and announced the death of Janice Dunbar, who had been a member of the guild since 1987.

Two minutes silence was held in her memory.

No meeting was held in April as it was our 44th annual birthday lunch at the Granary.

At the recent National Federation of Guilds Quiz competition, the West Midlands federation won.

Dorothy Edwards read out her report on the AGM of the West Midlands Federation and Margaret Fennell reported on the financial situation.

The speaker for the evening was Patricia Boys whose topic was “Watch your language”.

Her opening statement was that people all over the world were attempting to learn English as this was the accepted language for computers and other electronic systems, many found this difficult due to the complexity of our language.

Two words can be put together to have a meaning, but when said the other way round, they could mean something totally different.

New words were constantly being added to the language.

Betty Butler gave a vote of thanks for an entertaining and amusing talk, which was enjoyed by all.

The competition for the evening was, how many words could be made from the word dictionary.

Lorna O’Dowd won with a magnificent 148.

There were four raffle prizes won by Jean Evanson, Barbara Bowden, Anita Gibbs and Lilian Green.

The next meeting is on June 17 and will be Dr Michael Bird telling us about Fats Waller.
