MARY Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge was forced to cancel its event to mark the Queen's 90th birthday because of the great British weather.

The event had been due to take place on Sunday (June 12) and should have included a picnic in the hospice grounds and live music from a Freddie Mercury tribute act.

But hospice spokesman Dan Malin said: "When we arrived early on Sunday morning, the field was soaking went and completely inappropriate for people to sit on.

"We checked the forecast and saw thunderstorms were being predicted, so unfortunately we had to make an early decision and called it off."

The hospice, based in Hagley Road, Oldswinford, will attempt to re-stage the event on Sunday July 10 in the form of a Great British Garden Party.
