A NEWLY created church music group is set to launch in Oldswinford with a special festival weekend.
The unveiling of ‘Friends of the Music’ at St Mary’s Church will include a concert on Saturday evening and a display of flowers and memorabilia around the Rectory Road place of worship through the weekend
Getting underway at 7.30pm on Saturday (June 17), the inaugural free festival kicks off with a 'Concert of Music for Voices and Strings'.
The concert features the choir of St Mary’s, The Chamberlain Singers and The Amicus Trio, led by Will Croft and supported by conductor Jack Apperley and organist Graham Davies.
Peter Jones, group chairman, said: “We are all really looking forward to hosting our first ever festival weekend.
“The group has been set up to help promote and support the development of the wonderful choir and the very talented musicians we have at St Mary’s.
“All of the events at the church this weekend are free and we extend a welcome to everyone.”
As part of our launch of the Friends of the Music, the weekend will also mark the 100th anniversary of the death of a soldier Hugh Chapman Nash, a bell ringer at the church.
To honour Hugh’s memory, the bell ringers will be performing a quarter peal on the bells from 5.15pm on Sunday (June 18), before the festival closes with an evensong at 6.30pm.
