AWARD-WINNING children’s book author Alan Durant stopped off to ‘cut the ribbon’ at a Stourbridge school’s new learning centre.

The popular writer of children’s and teenage fiction was guest of honour at the launch of Pedmore Technology College and Community School’s new Independent Learning Centre on Wednesday (October 3).

Mr Durant also read excerpts from his books and spent time chatting to key stage three students about his experiences as a writer, offering tips on how to excel at creative writing and poetry.

Budding writers from year six at nearby Hob Green Primary School were also invited to meet Mr Durant who was invited to the school in Grange Lane, Lye, as part of celebrations for National Poetry Week.

Principal David Kemp said: “We’re delighted Mr Durant could join us.

“Students from all years have been taking part in poetry and writing competitions and for them to be able to meet and talk to an established author has been a real bonus.”

And he said the new Independent Learning Centre, a state-of-the-art study and library facility open before and after school, has been proving a “runaway success with students”.

He added: “It has become one of the most vibrant and busy areas in our school.”
