A MAN killed by a lorry in Quarry Bank is believed to have been in a dispute with another man moments before his death.

The 26-year-old, who has not been named, was hit by the HGV in Thorns Road just after 3.30pm on Tuesday (August 20).

Police believe the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been involved in a dispute with another man outside Formula 1 Hand Car Wash, Thorns Road, moments before the collision but would not confirm eyewitness reports that he was being chased by someone wielding a hammer.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Crews arrived to find a pedestrian in a collision with a lorry. “Despite the efforts of ambulance staff at the scene, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the man.”

The lorry involved was from Bilston based firm Highfield Haulage Ltd.

Firm spokesman Gary Owen said the male driver had returned to work despite being “shaken up” and said he was getting full support from staff.

Mr Owen added that as far as he was aware the man had suddenly run out in front of the lorry.

The dual carriageway was closed in both directions while police carried out investigations until the early hours of yesterday morning (Wednesday August 21).

Detective Sergeant Jim Munro, from Force CID said: “This collision happened at a busy time in the afternoon and I know there would have been a number of people in the area that witnessed it.

“I’m also keen to hear from anyone who has any information about the dispute the man was involved in just before the collision.

“If you saw anything that could help our investigation, please come forward as soon as possible.”
