A FORMER Quarry Bank teacher has been commemorated at her old school after a scarecrow competition was held in her memory.

Jos Smith, who taught at Quarry Bank Primary School and had a love for gardening, died earlier this year.

In commemoration of Mrs Smith, all pupils were asked to create scarecrows for their large planter gardens, which each class has in the school’s garden area, under the theme of ‘heroes’.

The scarecrows were judged against each other to decide who would win the Quarry Bank Primary School Jos Smith Gardening Award.

Tony Smith, Jos’s husband, judged the scarecrows and announced the winner as the year 3 and 4 entry of Harry Potter, St George and the school’s rights respecting mascot ‘Suni’.

Sally Meaden, staff member, said: “We thought it would be extra special to decorate our gardens and make some scarecrows based on the theme of heroes.

“Each class viewed the scarecrows in the garden and declared it a lovely way to remember such a special lady.

“All the classes enjoyed this activity and it captured the attention. We also won praise from our parents and carers.”

The school now has plans to make the scarecrow competition an annual event.
