POLITICIANS and litter pickers from across Stourbridge joined forces to fill more than 40 bags with rubbish collected from outside Sainsbury’s at Withymoor Village.

Amblecote’s Labour Party candidate Julie Baines teamed up with Tidy Stourbridge and community volunteers to organise a community litter pick around the Amblecote supermarket on April 12.

A team of 24 volunteers turned out including residents and campaigners from across the political spectrum.

Roger Kendrick, from TidyStourbridge, said: “It was more successful than I could reasonably have expected.

“We talk about working in the community but this was action not words to collect so much rubbish in the time available and through the hard work of all the volunteers make such a difference to the environment around Sainsbury’s.

“We’ll be writing to Sainsbury’s to ask them to display a thank you notice to all 24 who helped make this such a successful clean-up.

“We now hope all the community that uses this area of Withymoor Village will see the amount of work that went into the litter pick, which was also supported by Dudley Council’s street cleansing department, and do their best to maintain the environment to the same standard as the litter pick achieved.”

Volunteers will be out and about on a further community litter pick tonight (Tuesday April 19) which will take place in Thorns Avenue. Anyone wishing to join in should meet the team at 6.30pm at the traffic lights junction between Mount Pleasant and the Thorns Road (DY5 2XE).
