The chess season has now come to an end with the members of Stourbridge chess club holding their AGM. The following awards were made:

• The Presidents Cup, awarded for services to the club, was presented to Dave Scriven (13th consecutive year)

• The Denis Fernihough Trophy, awarded for most improved player, was presented to Joe Bombardini. Joe was new to chess and has made rapid progress.

• The Sydney Willets Trophy, awarded to the best club player, was presented to Zibby Koncki for his fighting style and excellent results on board one.

This has been a very good season for the Stourbridge first team. They won the Terrill trophy and division 2 of the Wolverhampton and district chess league.

The club is now starting its program of summer activities which enable members to stay in form and prospective members to come along and try their hand.

Stourbridge chess club’s summer tournament starts on June 6th 7:30pm at the Stourbridge Institute. It is a 5 round tournament using the Swiss pairing system. This means that everyone has the opportunity to play in all 5 rounds and will be paired against an opponent with the same score. The second round of the tournament will be held on 20th June with the remaining rounds taking place once a fortnight. This is a great opportunity for any prospective members to come along and join in.

Several Stourbridge players; Eric Horwill, Paul Sharratt, Tony Shaw, Sam Bradley, Hossam Aboushady, Richard Wilkinson, Jeremy Humphries and Joe Bombardini represented Worcestershire in the Midlands county team championships for players graded under 140. Worcestershire won their three matches and the championship. They are now through to the national semi finals after beating Hampshire 11½-4½.
