STOURBRIDGE'S last surviving movie rental store has closed.

GCL Video in Clifton Street has been renting out blockbusters and indie flicks to film fans since September 1990.

But owner Graham Lench announced on the GCL Facebook page this morning that he has now closed the shop for good.

He said thanked loyal customers for their "continued support over the past quarter of a century" and added: "It has been a wonderful time in my life and I will miss each and every one of you.”

In 2013 when national chain Blockbuster collapsed, Graham’s Old Quarter store became the last dedicated movie rental outlet in the area.

The old skool film fanatic, who opened his first independent video shop Classic Video in Colley Gate in 1984 when he was just 17, said he’d carry on as long as he could – despite fierce competition from the likes of Love Film, Netflix and other digital download sites which allow movie buffs to rent films without budging from their armchair.

But Graham, who knew all of his customers by name, said today (Wednesday): “The way people access films has changed dramatically over the last two years.

"I am sad as it has been a massive part of my life for the past 25 years. I owe it so much, but life moves on.”

Regular customers took to Facebook to voice their shock at the news, with one saying: "I can't believe I've just read this. I'm truly gutted. This shop was a massive part of my childhood. Clifton Street will not be the same."

While another said: "This shop was an institution, many happy hours spent chatting."

Another added: "I feel sad inside! This store sparked my love for film and I spent many hours becoming a movie buff there!"
