A KIND-hearted Stourbridge piano teacher has brought melodic memories back to care home residents with his musical donation.

Graeme Ponder donated a piano to Iverley-based High Lodge Care Home after he was told staff were on the lookout for one to help entertain elderly users.

The instrument is already proving very popular with residents who have been gathering around it to sing old time songs.

Staff at the home said the piano is also helping to play a big role for those who suffer with dementia.

Patricia Stevenson, care home manager, said: “Music has such a wonderful ability to bring back memories that can otherwise be lost to dementia.

“The piano has made a huge difference to our residents and for one lady in particular, Jean Howard, who used to sing in a local choir and was a prominent member of the Stourbridge Operatic Society.

“When it arrived it was not long before I heard music being played and it was Jean who was sitting in front of it. Fond memories just came flooding back and it was wonderful to see.

“Singing and playing music is so good for memory but also for social interaction.

“We cannot thank Graeme enough for donating what is such a wonderful gift. It is making such a difference.”
