CHILDREN from across Stourbridge have made headlines for all the ‘write’ reasons as the winners of a special writing competition have been announced.

Borough primary school pupils have been competing for the title of Dudley Young Writer of the Year, following close on the heels of last month’s successful Dudley Primary Inter-schools Math Championship.

Dudley Young Writer of the Year aims to celebrate the best in children’s fiction, non-fiction and poetry and showcase the talents of pupils aged seven to 11.

Kaitlin Higgs, from Crestwood Park Primary, won first prize in the ‘best fiction’ category for her piece called ‘Tsunami Survivor!’, while fellow Crestwood Park pupil Billy Byrne won first prize for ‘best non-fiction’ – his piece was called ‘Sea Life’.

Iren Treasure, from Ham Dingle Primary, took home the ‘best poetry’ title with the piece entitled ‘Tin Hats’. The poem was also named as the competition’s outright winner.

Cllr Ian Cooper, cabinet member for children’s service, said: “There are so many talented writers at our schools and this competition gave them the opportunity to be really creative and showcase their skills.

“Entries included newspaper reports, discussions, poems and creative writing.

“The standard was incredibly high and shows how, with the support of our committed teachers, our young people can rise to and meet this literary challenge.”
