BOTH the older and younger generations in Stourbridge have been lent a helping hand by a supermarket giant.

Staff from the town’s Tesco store have been busy making kind-hearted donations to local causes over the past few weeks.

Most recently, the store donated more than 20 snow shovels to Age Concern Stourbridge and Halesowen to help the town’s elderly residents throughout the cold months.

Wayne Barker, store manager, said: “Stourbridge Age Concern came to us and asked if there is anything we could do to help elderly people this winter.

“They were especially looking for ways to help them clear their driveways as well as assist them in getting out of their houses.

“So we have given the group snow shovels and more than 100 jars of a substance that easily melts snow and ice.

“The best thing is that the donations are just going to the Stourbridge Age Concern to help the elderly people in our area.”

Wayne also made a recent trip to Kinver pre-school playgroup, based at the village high school, and provided the small group with sand playing equipment.

He said: “The pre-school is quite small and doesn’t have many people to rely on to help pay for new equipment and toys for the children.

“We donated a number of sand bags as well as four sand play tables for the children to use and learn from.

“It was a lovely day and was great to see how much the children appreciated the donations.”

Staff at the store, which has celebrated its second birthday this week, are encouraging more groups and community organisations to apply for support.

Wayne added: “We do a lot of work with local groups, especially those who make a difference to the lives of the elderly and children.

“We urge more people to come forward to seek our help and all they have to do is either come in to the store or write to us and we will get back to them to let them know what we can do.”
