HUNDREDS of people have flocked to watch top British stars perform live on stage at Stourbridge Town Hall.

A seven metre wide screen installed at the Crown Centre venue showing National Theatre productions live from the capital is proving to be a sell-out success.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston’s production of Hamlet, currently running at the Barbican Theatre, was shown via a live satellite link earlier this month and sold out.

Tickets to a live broadcast of Dame Judi Dench’s The Winter’s Tale on November 26 were all snapped up within days of release, but there are still tickets to see an ‘encore’ showing of the production on December 2.

A series of both live and recorded London performances are being showcased on the screen, which is also being used as a new cinema screen for the hall’s regular movie events.

Upcoming features include the hit Broadway production Of Mice and Men on November 19 starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, as well as live broadcasts on December 8 of Bronte’s classic Jane Eyre and the scandal filled Les Liaisons Dangereuses on January 28.

Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The production of Hamlet was a sell-out success and the evening had a real energy about it.

“I hope that audiences continue to support this exciting project which brings the best of the West End and Broadway to a local audience.”
