The season is definitely ending on a high note for Stourbridge chess club with this week bringing much success.

In Dudley division one, Stourbridge faced Halesowen on Monday for their final match in this division. Stourbridge were outgraded on every board except for board 4 where Halesowen fielded a strong ungraded player. Theoretically Halesowen should have won but Stourbridge thumped Halesowen 3½-½ with wins for Eric Horwill, Sam Bradley and Jeremy Humphries. This result meant there was a 3 way tie for first in the division but Stourbridge were confirmed as Dudley Division 1 Champions because they had won more individual games.

Also on Monday the BDCL Rules and Disputes Committee upheld Stourbridge’s complaint that South Birmingham had not played in strength order in their division tie. Stourbridge were therefore awarded the match. But unfortunately this was not enough to save Stourbridge from relegation.

The second team won their match against St Georges in the 3rd division of the Birmingham league by default and now finish mid table with a 50% record.

Thursday night was Cup Final night. Stourbridge played against Brewood in the Wolverhampton league Humphreys Cup. This is for players graded under 130. Brewood had a decent team, but so did Stourbridge with Sam Bradley and Martin Berridge on fire this season. Stourbridge won! Sam won on board 1 with Jeremy Humphries , Colin Woodall and Martin Berridge all drawing. SCC retains the trophy that it also won last season.
