The chess season is now drawing to a close. This week Stourbridge chess club played their final match of the 2015/2016 season.

They faced Droitwich in division 2 of the Worcester and district league. Stourbridge had already won the division but now have a 100% record after beating Droitwich 3½-½ with wins for Sam Bradley, Julie Wilson and Jeremy Humphries and a draw from Colin Woodall.

Stourbridge members; Keith and Nick Arkell and Jeremy Fallowfield recently played in the open section of the Nottingham congress while Nick’s son Daniel played in the minor section. Keith won the open with a perfect 5 out of 5 score while Nick and Jeremy came equal second with four other players on 3.5 out of 5. All 3 Stourbridge players have now qualified to play in the British championship which is a great achievement. Nick also won the prize for the best player graded under 185.

Junior Daniel Arkell had a 50% (2½) score in the minor.

The chess club’s annual dinner will be held on June 1st at Vesuvio.

The club’s program of summer activities kicks off with the summer tournament on June 15th. It is a 5 round tournament using the Swiss pairing system. This means that everyone has the opportunity to play in all 5 rounds and will be paired against an opponent with the same score. The second round of the tournament will be held on 29th June with the remaining rounds taking place once a fortnight. This is a great opportunity for any prospective members to come along and join in.
