Stourbridge Chess Club
The final round of the summer tournament was played on Wednesday. The tournament leader new member, 16 year old Gathsara Seekkuge faced former Welsh international Julie Wilson. Julie pushed for a win with the white pieces but was unable to break through against Gathsara’s solid defending and eventually a draw was agreed. Gathsara’s final score of 3½ out of a possible 5 was enough to make him overall winner. Six players tied for second place on 3 points! This indicates just how closely fought the tournament was.
Richard Wilkinson played well to win against higher rated Sam Bradley and Gayathma Seekkuge scored her second win of the tournament.
The chess club will be holding a preseason blitz tournament on August 31 and the first match of the 2016-17 season is on September 5. Stourbridge will be fields teams in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Worcester chess leagues to make sure all members will have the opportunity to play regularly in competitive matches
