POPULAR Stourbridge venue ScaryCanary has announced it will close its doors at the end of the month after more than two years in the High Street.

Owner Stacey Smith said she has taken the tough decision to move on to pastures new after converting the former McDonald's unit into a music venue in 2014 alongside her husband Steve Pilcher, who passed away in September 2015.

Announcing on the venue’s Facebook page this week, Stacey wrote: “ScaryCanary wants to announce to all of you that it is coming to the end of an amazing journey as a venue.

“I will now speak from my heart as the owner to say thanks to each and every one of you that has helped me to build such an epic entity.

“It was born from the hearts and minds of two people three years ago. It was built with love and bare hands by a tiny team for one main purpose, to celebrate all things creative....music, art, movies, words, comedy etc and to have a bloody good knees up doing it.

“The venue has seen so many different varieties of artists, so many genres of music, so many acts and styles of stuff come through its doors both local and worldwide I have lost count, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many different and beautiful people and gained lifelong skills, knowledge and friendships.

“I have also danced a hell of a lot!

“I won't bore you with the personal reasons for my decision to move onto new projects as ScaryCanary and to close the doors on this one, just know it's not been a decision made lightly considering its success and fantastic following.

“So let's just have one massive blast during the last few weeks of ScaryCanary as a venue which will close its doors on March the 31st...

“Let’s go out on a high, ‘it's better to burn out than to fade away’ – massive thanks to all involved in team SC, I am very proud of the things we have achieved together.

“Love from Stace (& I'm sure Stevo R.I.P) : )”

Since leaving the message on Facebook, Stacey said she was overwhelmed with the response she received, including a number of comments from regular customers.

She told the News: “It wasn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly, but I just thought it’s the time to gift it to someone else.

“I have worked my arse off over the past three years to make this into a successful venue and I would now quite like a sit down.

“I will finally get to have a break and go on holiday, do the things that I haven’t had the chance to do over the past few years.

“It’s been a difficult few years and really has had its ups and downs. Losing Steve hit me hard and doing it on my own was tough.

“But I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved and this is not the end of ScaryCanary – it’s just the end of its current form.”

Stacey is now looking for anyone who would be interested in taking on the space and continuing it as a music venue to contact her by emailing info@scarycanaryvenue.com
