Wollaston Gardeners Guild

The members held their monthly meeting at Stourbridge Institute on May 20 which was chaired by Adam Greathead. He opened the meeting by welcoming both existing, new members, visitors, and the speaker for the night Mike King.

The president Eric Southall addressed the meeting and said that the presidents plant sale held on May 14/15 was a great success, and the volume and quality of the produce was outstanding. He wished to thank all members who helped to set up the event, sell the plants, and who brought along the produce. To date the sale as raised £604.40 which will be presented to The White House Cancer Support at Dudley at a later date.

The speaker for the evening Mike King began by saying that at the age of four his grandmother told him to look for plants that eat insects while on holiday in Dorset, and this set him on a path for the rest of his life, slowly building up his collection to what it is today, an amazing growlist of one thousand different clones of Pitcher plants, Venus fly traps, Cobra lilies, and Sundews. With the aid of a slide show he related how he added greenhouse after greenhouse to house the ever growing collection, which is based in Telford. He also outlined how to care for these unusual plants, and this proved to be a very interesting presentation

Adam thanked Mike for a most absorbing talk, and the members responded in the usual manner.

The first prize winners in the monthly show were as follows: 1 spring cabbage H Barnett; 3 sticks of rhubarb M Grice; 1 bunch spring onions D Wells; 1 vase of spring flowers U Langley; 1 chocolate sponge J James; 6 pieces of flapjack J James.

Adam closed the meeting, wished everyone a safe journey home, and hoped everyone had enjoyed the evening.

The next meeting will be held on June 19. The speaker will be Bob Brown of Cotswold Garden Flowers, the talk entitled "My 30 best plants". This talk will be by ticket only.

The group meets on the third Monday of each month at The Stourbridge Institute at 7 for 7.30pm. For further details call 01384 828654.
