Dudley South Ladies Luncheon

At the June meeting Chairman Ann Rogers welcomed 4 visitors to join members for a 3-course lunch at The Lodge, Wellington Road, Dudley to hear speaker Patricia Boyd on the subject of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth IIs’ Diamond Jubilees.

Apart from being a superb speaker Mrs Boyd’s comparison of these two queens was fascinating. They are the only two monarchs who have ever celebrated a diamond jubilee, both serving their country for over 64 years. They were Queens in their own right, not through marriage, and due unexpectedly through death and abdication were propelled on to the throne at a young age. They both chose their own husbands; intelligent men who would have been famous in their own right if circumstances had been different. Happily Prince Phillip has a good sense of humour but Prince Albert had none, but both were invaluable rocks to their wives. Queen Victoria had 9 children and had a lot more power than royalty today but her Jubilee celebrations only lasted one day whereas Queen Elizabeth’s lasted five. Victoria’s voice was never recorded but our Queen has been heard in every nation and has the most famous face in the world.

Members were invited to put in their diaries Ann Rogers’ Coffee Morning on Friday 11th August 10.30am to 12.30pm including strawberries and cream scones, raffle and Bring & Buy. This social event is held instead of a luncheon in August.

Meetings are held on the second Friday each month at The Lodge, Wellington Road, Dudley 12pm for 12.30pm the next being on the 14th July when the speaker will be Mr. Michael Taylor a well known local author who is speaking about “The Fact in Fiction”.
