THOUSANDS of people flooded into Stourbridge to see Coronation Street star Antony Cotton switch on the town’s Christmas lights.

The long-serving Street star, who plays Sean Tully in the popular soap, chatted on stage to Black Country Radio’s Dave Brownhill before pressing the red button to officially light up the town at 5pm today (Saturday November 25).

Stourbridge News:

David Harcourt, president of Stourbridge Chamber of Trade, said: “The crowds have come out in their thousands and this is the biggest I think we’ve ever had at the festival for the lights switch on.”

He added: “The weather has been crisp and dry which has been a real bonus and Tudor Markets have made a dramatic entrance into the Stourbridge festival.”

The switch on in Crown Square followed a day of festive fun in the town which included live music, facepainting, children's rides, a Christmas market and seasonal refreshments.

Antony Cotton's guest slot at the event followed an appearance at last year's switch on bash by fellow Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd (David Platt).

The day of festive fun was organised by the council in conjunction with Stourbridge and District Chamber of Trade with sponsorship from the Ryemarket Shopping Centre, Talbots Solicitors, Mazda Stourbridge, Tudor Markets, Chicago’s and Handelsbanken.
