A POPULAR former principal of Stourbridge’s King Edward VI College has died after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

Dr John Glazier, who was principal from 2001 to 2007, passed away at his Stourton home on October 23, aged 62.

He leaves a wife - Janet, six children and three grandchildren.

Former King Edward’s vice-principal Colin Roberts led tributes to Dr Glazier, describing him as a “caring principal” who was “very supportive of his staff”.

He added: “Dr Glazier will be remembered by those who worked with him and knew him as a fair and approachable leader who demonstrated the ability to listen to and consider the views of others.

“He had a fine sense of humour with a quick and lively wit.

“He was a committed educationalist and an astute financial planner who ensured the college finances remained in good order - not least when he had to assume the responsibilities of finance director for a period of time.”

“He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Yorkshire-born Dr Glazier, who was principal at Rutland Sixth Form College before taking over at King Edward’s, is credited with boosting the successful Lower High Street college’s profile during his time at the helm.

While he was in the top role King Edward’s gained Beacon College status and was even mentioned in the House of Commons.

Current college principal Sharon Phillips, who succeeded Dr Glazier, said: “John was a talented and hard-working principal, who approached his role at King Edward’s with great energy and enthusiasm and who was committed to ensuring that students got the best deal possible. He will be sadly missed.”

In his spare time Dr Glazier had a keen interest in stamps, classical music and jazz. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, good food and wine.

His funeral will be held at Stourbridge Crematorium on Thursday November 8 at 11am.
