A WIDOW is hoping for a Christmas miracle to solve the mystery of a crash in Stourton which killed her husband.

Emma Garfield, aged 42, is appealing for more information about what caused motorcyclist Richard Garfield, 47, to collide with a wall on Bridgnorth Road.

Tragedy struck at 10.20pm on Sunday August 12 when Mr Garfield's Honda CBR 600 bike hit the wall and so far, despite a police investigation, there are no clues about the cause of the smash.

Mrs Garfield said: "It would mean a lot to find the answers. We all want to know why and what happened and we don't have those answers at the moment.

"It is really still raw, it feels like it was yesterday. There was a knock on the door and the police said Richard had been in an accident. I said would they like me to go to the hospital and they said they were terribly sorry but he had passed away.

"I don't remember much after that, I went to identify his body and when I saw him I willed him to wake up - but he didn't."

The fatal crash happened as much of the UK was watching the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games on TV, which Mrs Garfield believes would have left very little traffic on the roads.

The mystery is deeper because the weather was good at the time of the incident and Mr Garfield was an experienced biker.

Speaking shortly after the tragedy, she said her family had been left devastated by the death of her husband of 14 years.

The businesswoman from Kidderminster said: “He was a very private man but very thoughtful and very kind.

“He was always thinking of other people and he was very well-liked with everybody that knew him. He absolutely loved his bike and he was a very, very careful driver."

Mr Garfield was riding from Wollaston towards Kidderminster at the time of the crash, his bike had a distinctive registration number - G10 ARF.

Mrs Garfield paid tribute to medical teams who battled for an hour at the roadside to save her husband. But as she faces her first Christmas alone she is left with just memories and many unanswered questions.

She said: "It would give us a little bit of closure, my family and I are desperate to find out what happened that sad night."

Anyone who saw Richard Garfield on the night of the crash, or has any information, should contact investigating officer Pc Matt Lovatt at Staffordshire Police on 101.
