Wall Heath Horticultural Guild

Following the Christmas break, members met again on Tuesday February 2 for a delightful meeting.

A new idea for the guild is for members to bring a pot plant to show and be judged. This was well supported on Tuesday was a great success. A very colourful display of bloom for a cold evening.

Derek Bull who is a volunteer and garden guide at Hid cote Manor kindly came and talked to members about it. He showed examples of wonderful photographs which had been done by Country Life Magazine in the 1930s up to the 1950s which were black and white leading onto more contemporary photography.

He gave a wonderful History of Lawrence Johnson 1871 1958 who owned the Manor which was purchased for him by his very wealthy American Mother Gertrude Winthrop who was a Divorcee.

The National Trust took over the Manor and gardens in 1948. Everything that is done within the gardens is strictly overseen by English Heritage.

Amanda Ridney Chairman gave information regarding forthcoming events within the Guild. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm.

Anyone wishing to visit or join the Guild which is held at The Community Centre Enville Road Wall Heath Kingswinford will be made very welcome. Information can be obtained from Amanda Ridney 01384 287480.
