VILLAGERS in Wall Heath will be getting into the festive spirit this weekend.

The Wall Heath Village Light Up event, which aims to get families feeling Christmassy, will take place on Sunday November 26 from 1pm to 6pm at the Horse & Jockey pub in the High Street.

There'll be live music, mulled wine, food, stalls and Santa's grotto at the event, organised by the Wall Heath Village People.

To help ensure proceedings pass off safely, the A449 Kidderminster Road closed to traffic from 1.30pm to 5.30pm between Enville Road and Swindon Road and vice versa.

Access to businesses including the garage and Hickory's Smokehouse, however, will be maintained.

Meanwhile - a brand new Christmas tree has been put up in Albion Parade in Wall Heath and will be decorated in time for the event, after the village's previous planted fir tree was chopped down by council officers following complaints it had died and would likely become an "object of ridicule".

Councillor Dave Tyler, who represents Wall Heath and is the current Mayor of Dudley, said "It was always the plan to have a cut tree in place until the planted tree reached a size where it could be dressed.

"When that tree died it was removed and another tree will be planted in the new year. I hope the new planted tree survives this time."
