A WOLLASTON butcher proved he was a cut above the rest when he scooped numerous awards for his produce at a recent competition.

Adam Lang, owner of Langs Butchers of Wollaston, was triumphant at the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society’s produce competition, at the English Winter Fair, held at Stafford County Showground.

The competition on Sunday November 17, coincided with the four year anniversary of the opening of his shop, which made his victory even sweeter.

Mr Lang won the speciality cold pie category with his Christmas cracker pork pie, which consists of sausage meat stuffing, turkey breast, ox tongue, cranberry sauce and pork pie meat.

He also took the speciality hot pie title with his steak and kidney pie and his New Yorker pork pie, which he made with pork pie meat, caramelised red onion, home-made corned beef and gherkin was crowned the supreme champion.

The 36-year-old from Sedgley also received gold awards for his plain pork sausage, traditional pork pie, and Grandma Lang's beef stew pie and a silver award for his balti pork sausage.

The awards were the result of hours of preparation, he said: "I was at the shop until 10pm the night before, baking them and making sure they were all perfect and then I got there at 4.30am on Sunday to cook the sausages.

"A lot of people entered the competition and everyone was trying as hard I was to bring something special that would catch the judges' eye. I was quietly confident but still apprehensive.

"To win on the same day that I was celebrating the fourth year of the shop was a dream come true."
