EMERGENCY services were out in Wollaston this week giving out safety advice – and some more severe action – to drivers during a road safety morning.

Officers from Stourbridge Police, as well as a crew from Stourbridge Fire Station, were stopping speeding motorists on Bridgnorth Road on Monday (December 19) as part of their Christmas safety campaign.

Drivers were also checked on other issues surrounding drink driving, not wearing seat belts and illegally tinted windows, while one driver was even caught on a warrant and for breaching a court order.

Ward councillor Nic Barlow, who is actively involved in the area’s community speed watch initiative, was invited to join the officers throughout the morning.

Cllr Barlow said: “It was a very successful morning and something which is vitally important in keeping our community safe.

“We did pull a few people over for drink driving, because at Christmas, people think they are safe to have a few drinks and then the following morning get in the car to go to work.

“But people need to be aware that there is still alcohol in their system and it does affect driving ability.

“We were also out with the speed gun and measured a few people bombing down Bridgnorth Road from The Foresters Arms.

“We then pulled them onto the community centre car park where the police gave them some advice as well as being shown a video by the fire service about the dangers of speeding.

“It is great that we have a police and fire service that work very closely together and the morning also made them more aware of the hotspots around the patch.

“This kind of initiative is really important and if it makes drivers think twice about speeding, having a drink before they drive or not wearing a seatbelt, then it’s done its job.”
