A 16-year-old suffered a serious head injury when she was hit by a car at the junction of Wollescote Road and Hodge Hill Avenue at 8am on Tuesday morning (March 15).

The teenager had initially been reported to be unconscious but started to come round while West Midlands Ambulance Service staff were treating her.

She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham, by air ambulance where she remains in a serious condition.

The female driver of the car, a Vauxhall Meriva, was taken to Russells Hall Hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

In a bid to slow down traffic and stop a fatal incident from happening, local resident Mitchell Bolton has started an online petition to get a zebra crossing placed on the “dangerous” Wollescote Road.

Mitchell said: “As one of the main routes children use to get to school there is no procedure in place to enable them to cross safely.

“I’m a dad of two young girls and it is a parent’s worst nightmare to think your child could get severely hurt crossing a road on their way to school.

“I used to go to The Grange School and would wait 10 minutes at the road waiting for it to be clear enough to cross, but eventually you have to chance it.

“As a resident of the area all my life, and a UKIP candidate for Wollescote in the May election, I feel it’s my job to not only serve the people of Wollescote, but look after them too.

“As well as the children walking to school, there are plenty of people, mainly the elderly, who have to risk their lives crossing the road to get over to walk their dogs in the park.

“Unfortunately it is only a matter of time before someone loses there life due to there not being an adequate crossing there.”

West Midlands Police officers, who are now appealing for witnesses to the crash, said they have spoken to the driver, who stopped at the scene.

Sergeant Adam Green, from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A number of witnesses have already come forward, but I would appeal to anyone else who may have seen the incident to contact us to help us establish exactly what happened.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 and quote incident number 357 15/3.
