DUDLEY Council’s inspections of headstones at borough cemeteries is continuing - with checks now due to be carried out at Cradley Cemetery followed by Lye and Wollescote.

Inspections to ensure graves are safe for people to visit started in 2007 and, having checked all larger memorials across Dudley, council bereavement staff are now in the process of inspecting smaller headstones.

Work has already been carried out at Stourbridge, Gornal Wood and Dudley - with attention now shifting to Cradley Cemetery before staff move onto Lye and Wollescote in the next few months.

The inspections are being carried out in response to government guidelines and any headstones declared unstable will be repaired and costs met by the council.

Councillor David Stanley, Dudley’s cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “This work continues to be carried out very sensitively and our staff are always available to speak to families directly should they wish to do so.”

It is anticipated that all lawn memorials will have been inspected and made safe at the borough’s seven cemeteries (Stourbridge, Gornal Wood, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Cradley, Halesowen and Lye and Wollescote) in the next two to three years.
