HIGHWAY chiefs are being urged to install major traffic calming measures on an accident blackspot between Cradley and Wollescote.

Oldnall Road has been the scene of dozens of crashes over the years, the latest spate - which many motorists could not explain - being earlier this year.

As a result, the road was deep cleansed by Dudley Council and an unusual amount of oil was removed from the surface.

Now Cradley and Wollescote Labour councillor Tim Crumpton is pressing for traffic calming on the road, including traffic lights and a mini-roundabout.

“We’ve already had the speed limit reduced from 50 to 40mph, but accidents are still happening and more needs to be done,” he said.

Cllr Crumpton said the road had steep, hilly sections, was high and exposed to the elements, with a bad camber and suffered parking congestion at the Colley Gate end.

He added: “I am also concerned that if the road surface is prone to holding oil, that there will be a build up again after the deep cleanse. It needs examining very carefully and, if necessary, the council should lay new tarmac.”

John Millar, director of urban environment, said the council was hoping to resurface the road later this year, but would not comment on the call for traffic calming measures.

He said: "In response to local concerns the council has deep cleaned Oldnall Road earlier this year to address an oil spillage problem and since then there have been no further reported collisions.

“We will, of course, continue to monitor the site in liaison with the police and also look to carry out further resurfacing treatments later this year."
