IMPRESSIONS of the Normandy D-Day Landing sites by an internationally renowned Wordsley artist can be seen in Birmingham until Saturday (October 26).
Rob Perry, who is famous for his impressionist depictions of battlefields, visited the former beach battlefield locations in the summer as part of a Second World War visual research project by the University of Northampton and The War Research Society.
During the trip he met veterans of the 1944 to 45 European operation from the first landings in Normandy through to the crossing of the Rhine in the final stages of the war.
He also documented battlefield sites including Gold Beach and Mulberry Harbour through a series of drawings and paintings.
They are currently on display at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery, Brook Street, St Paul’s, Birmingham alongside Mr Perry’s recent depictions of favourite scenes from the Black Country, the Lake District and the coast of mid-Wales.
The artist from Wordsley Green, who previously represented the university on a trip to China to document ancient cave drawings, said of his latest expedition: “I am amazed at the places and situations into which my humble box of paints has lead me and the remarkable human beings and unknown heroes it has enabled me to meet.”
After the weekend Mr Perry’s images will move on to the Gold Beach Museum in Ver-sur-Mer in Normandy where they will be showcased from October 28 to 31.
