WORDSLEY’S Red House Glass Cone is offering something for the ladies this Mother’s Day weekend.

The attraction in Stourbridge’s Glass Quarter, world-renowned for its contribution to the glass industry, will be home to a Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) project exploring the role of women in the area’s glassmaking history.

Women and the Glass Industry aims to share the stories of women who have worked in the skilled, and often dangerous profession, as well as presenting living histories from local women who worked in one of the town’s many glassmaking factories.

There will also be hands-on activities at the cone’s Ladies Day event on Saturday, March 14.

The day will include a memory table with the chance to look at artefacts and images of women in the glass industry.

Drop in glass crafts where children and adults can participate in glass painting with sponges and cotton buds and replicating stained glass with acetate colouring will also be on offer.

Dudley councillor Hilary Bills, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “Combining Ladies Day with our Mother’s Day activities is a fantastic idea and will hopefully help people of all generations find out the important, and underplayed role women have played in Stourbridge’s remarkable glassmaking history.

“The HLF project will allow us to capture forever first-hand narratives of local women whose stories may never otherwise have been told and I can’t wait to see the results of the events programme.”

The Red House Glass Cone, in Bridge Street, is free to enter everyday from 10am until 4pm.
