WORDSLEY’S Red House Glass Cone will be swapping glassmaking for lacemaking tomorrow (Saturday, September 12) when it celebrates National Lacemaking Day.
The day is a chance for people to learn about lacemaking, its traditions and how it is still a living English tradition.
An event was suggested by The Lace Guild, which is situated just down the road from the cone at the Hollies, in Wordsley High Street.
The two venues collaborate on a regular basis, with the cone acting as host venue for the guild’s exhibitions but this is the first time the guild has staged a standalone demonstration at the cone.
Members of the Guild will be demonstrating throughout Saturday, offering visitors the chance to see how lace is made and also to have a go themselves.
The Lace Guild itself will also be open on tomorrow’s National Lacemaking Day with demonstrations and small exhibitions.
Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, Dudley cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The members of the Lace Guild are keeping the tradition of lacemaking alive, celebrating not just the traditional lacemaking of the past but also showing how modern designers and practitioners can put a new twist on this most traditional of skills.
“The cone is a near neighbour to the guild and is the perfect setting in which to see this skill put on show.”
The Red House Glass Cone is free to visitors between 10am and 4pm daily.
