A FORMER Wordsley man who has recently overcome bladder cancer is getting on his motorbike in aid of charity.

Alan Lewis, an ex-Glynne Primary School pupil, will be taking part in a mammoth motorcycle trek this August, which includes riding between nine racing tracks across three different countries in five days.

Alongside friend Mark Braund, whose brother-in-law died from liver cancer in February, Alan will use the event to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Now living in Kingsteignton, in Devon, Alan said: “I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in August 2015 and have since had part of my bladder removed as well as the kidney it affected.

“I am currently being checked to see if chemotherapy is required but recently was given the all clear.

“It was during one of my many outpatient appointments that I had the idea for the event after seeing a four-year-old girl having her first chemo and a family devastated by the news that their daughter had been diagnosed with this cruel disease.”

Alan and Mark will start their charity ride in Knockhill, Scotland, on August 11 and will then travel to Oulton Park, Donnington Park and Silverstone, before heading to Cadwell Park and Snetterton for August 13.

Their next stop will follow a short hop across the English Channel on August 14 to Assen, Holland, before returning on August 15 to visit Brands Hatch and Thruxton.

Alan added: “All of the tracks have agreed to our visit and R&G Racing products have committed nine British Superbike riders to attend each track when we visit for photos, and they have also offered a significant contribution to the £20,000 which is my target for the event.”

The 54-year-old, who moved to the south-east when he was 23 to play football for Torquay United, is now a general manager for a food company in Exeter.

His father, Alan senior, who still lives in Wordsley, said: “We are so proud of what Alan is doing and would love the local community to get behind him.”
