THE Guild of Glass Engravers has returned to the Red House Glass Cone for a three month exhibition of pieces.

Taking its members from all over the country, the guild has exhibited at the Wordsley attraction many times over the years, most notably during three International Glass Festivals.

This exhibition features work by members of the Stourbridge and Midlands branch and the South West branch of the guild, with pieces – many of which are for sale – ranging from elaborate, large scale items to small Christmas decorations.

Also exhibiting is a retrospective display of stipple engraving by the late Doug Burgess, including his engraving of the Glasshouse Cone.

Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, cabinet member responsible for tourism, said: “It’s great to have the Guild of Glass Engravers back at the cone, and in time for Christmas too.

“The pieces are so varied in style, it’s hard to believe that they are all engraved, the methods used are so different that the pieces are all utterly unique.”

A wide range of techniques have been used including stipple engraving, drill engraving, and sandblasting. Some pieces also combine gilding and enamelling with engraving or use the ‘graal’ technique where the engraved vessel is dipped into hot glass and re-blown.

The exhibition runs at the Red House Glass Cone, in High Street, until Friday January, 13. Admission to the cone is free between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday and 11am until 4pm at weekends.
