A HUSBAND and wife from Wordsley are dusting off their walking boots to join intrepid television presenter Jeff Stelling in his walking challenge for Prostate Cancer UK.

Ken and Mags Courts will join Jeff on the fourth day of his March for Men, walking 26 miles from Kidderminster Harriers FC to Shrewsbury Town FC on June 5.

The duo, of Arundel Road, were inspired to join the march after Ken, aged 66, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011, a few weeks before the pair got married.

Ken had brachytherapy treatment in April 2012 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and still attends annual appointments there.

Mags, aged 43, said: “We signed up as we wanted to promote Ken’s keenness for men to consider any changes in their water work habits and get themselves checked out.

“At first he suggested to his GP that he was going to the toilet a bit more often than he thought was normal. I thought he was just being a hypochondriac, so if he had just listened to me, we might not be where we are today.

“But Ken recently got the best news ever as he is now considered a survivor, rather than a sufferer, as his PSA [prostate-specific antigen] is at 0.36 – the lowest it has been for five years since his brachytherapy, which we are delighted with.

“It makes the walk a celebration of the best news we could have wished for.”

The walk that Ken and Mags are taking part in is the fourth of 15 marathons in 15 days the Sky Sports presenter is leading.

Starting in Devon on Friday June 2, Jeff’s March for Men will see the former Countdown host walk 400 miles from the South West to the North East, with the stroll starting at St James Park, home of the Exeter City, and ending at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park a fortnight later.

Jeff said: “It makes me feel very humble, but it also makes me feel very gratified, that I’m in position where I can do something.

“Prostate cancer kills one man ever hour in the UK, and I just decided I couldn’t sit on my backside and do nothing about it.

“I can put one foot in front of the next and hopefully raise awareness and raise funds to help men beat this diabolical disease.”
