Wordsley M Townswomen's Guild

The July meeting was opened by chairman of the day Wendy Lloyd who welcomed members and visitors attending. Minutes of the June meeting, prepared by secretary, Liz Moseley, was signed and the treasurers report was available for perusal.

Liz gave details of a trip on October 2 to Worcester to see the pottery followed by a tea.

The Federation Report included the Annual Lunch at the Copthorne Hotel, Merry Hill 7th August £21, when friends can be invited and the speaker will be Sue Hickman whose talk is entitled ‘Across the Andes on Horseback’ - payment for this collected at this meeting. On the 11th October a day of ‘Autumn Celebrations’ has been organised starting at 10.30am, at Wollaston Village Hall, with a talk by Max Keen an excellent speaker and presenter followed by a fish and chip lunch and concludes with Alison Snowdon giving valuations on items brought in by members - a very good day at £10. An Arts and Crafts day for card making is on November 1 at Norton Community Association.

There will be no usual monthly meeting as the Federation Annual Lunch at The Copthorne Hotel will take place. Next lunch date is September 4. The Christmas meal will be at The Lodge, Dudley on December 4

On August 23 Margaret Ford with host a coffee morning at her home 10.30am. All are welcome.

Theatre - Barbara Taylor gave details of ‘South Pacific’ being shown at Dormston School on September 30, a matinee with West Bromwich Operatic at a cost of £14.50. West Brom are also presenting ‘Priscilla – Queen of the Desert’ at The Grand Theatre in April 2018.

The raffle was then drawn.

Wendy introduced Kath Reynolds who gave as very entertaining and humorous talk, with audience participation, entitled ‘Goose Grease and Brown Paper’. Before the National Health Service was inaugurated many remedies for certain illnesses were from old medicinal recipes. .As it was expensive for most, years ago, to call in the doctor, cupboard remedies were used for sore throats, ear ache, chest complaints and even warts.

Kath brought a variety of ‘medicines’ used for all sorts of ailments, including a bottle of ‘whisky’. Liz Hubbard gave the vote of thanks.

Wordsley Community Centre Summer Raffle – Prizes were won by three members and presented by Rosemary Skidmore. The morning ended with tea or coffee and biscuits.

The next Guild meeting is on August 21 10am when Meg Farmer will give a talk entitled ‘101 Children’. Meg will give this light hearted talk about her experiences during the time she fostered 97 children together with 4 of her own.

All meetings are held at Wordsley Green Community Centre the third Monday every month. 10am. Visitors are always very welcome to attend any of our meetings.
