Kidney transplant is no obstacle for medallist

AN EIGHT-year-old kidney transplant patient has astounded friends and family by scooping a silver medal at the National Transplant Games.

Emily Hart, who had the operation in October last year, came second in an obstacle race at the games held in Leeds.

Competing against hundreds of talented athletes, Emily climbed through hoops, dribbled a ball and balanced on beams to secure second place in the race.

She said: “It was great to have finished second. I was so pleased that I didn't take the medal off for days.”

For the operation Emily's father, Baptist Minister Richard Hart, donated one of his kidneys. He said he is amazed at the progress she has made.

“It was a special moment to watch her compete in this event and we were thrilled to bits she did so well. She was so excited to be competing and to win a medal was the icing on the cake.”

He added: “She is now looking forward to taking part in future sporting events.”

Since the operation, Emily, who goes to Downe Primary School, has regular blood tests at Guy's Hospital to monitor her progress.

Mr Hart, 35, of the Baptist Church, Luxton Road, Downe, said despite a few minor complications all the signs look very promising.

“The progress she has made has been nothing short of sensational. Everything seems to have gone smoothly and she can now look forward to a bright future.”

He added: “It is great to see her enjoying life again.”
