A SPECIALIST forensic diving team came up empty handed after its first search of the Wye for the handle of the knife used in Hereford's fatal Father's Day stabbing.

The divers, from South Wales Police, are expected back at Hunderton bridge for a second search today.

An initial search of the riverbed, in relatively still, clear water to a depth of around 5m, has been underway for much of yesterday.

Detectives have confirmed the recovery of the knife blade from murder victim Christian Bagley.

The handle is believed to have broken off when Mr Bagley was stabbed from behind on the pathway below the bridge.

Divers went into the water just after 11.30am yesterday to toothcomb a search area around the bridge extended several yards upstream and downstream.

Update on Friday, July 3 at 5pm: Police said there were no significant updates from today's search.
