NOW the summer months are well and truly over, Dudley Council is launching its annual scheme to help people battling the effects of freezing temperatures.

The Winter Warmth Support Service is gearing up to help tenants and homeowners of the borough to have warmer homes and lower fuel bills.

Last year’s scheme helped more than 800 households cope with problems caused by the cold and fuel poverty with a variety of information, practical support and expert advice.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for housing, said: “Cold homes are known to worsen a number of conditions like arthritis, respiratory and mobility problems and can even trigger heart attacks and strokes.

“It is important to realise that the cold also can damage the health of younger adults and children, causing breathing problems and even mental health issues.

“The Winter Warmth Support Service is not restricted to older people, those on benefits or in rented accommodation. No-one in the borough has to live in the cold, or be worried about paying their fuel bills.”

The service offers home visits to qualifying people of all ages and with all types of homes, giving advice on keeping warm, accessing energy discounts and cheaper tariffs, also helping to set heating controls and distributing blankets and hot water bottles.
