A REDDITCH postman is hoping to deliver a first class performance in honour of Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham when he competes in a half-marathon next week.

Alan Whiting, aged 45, from Headless Cross, is taking part in the Morrisons Great Birmingham Run with the target of raising at least £500 for the fund.

The father-of-three, who has taken part in the half marathon for the last five years, aims to beat his personal best time of 1 hour 42 minutes and 31 seconds.

Last month marked the 35th anniversary of the musician's death.

"John’s brother, the late Mick Bonham was also a keen runner and I'm sure he’d have competed on behalf of the fund if he was still with us," Mr Whiting said.

"So I’ll be running in memory of both of them.

"I live just a few doors from where John was born and I wanted to contribute to the fundraising effort."

His wife, Teresa, daughters Amy, Lucy and Ellie, alongside family and friends will be cheering on Mr Whiting during the Midlands biggest half marathon on Sunday, October 18.

Mr Whiting will be wearing bib number 2900 and setting off at 10.10am from Jennens Road near Millennium Point.

The fund has been set with the aim to raise an initial £50,000 for the design and installation of a permanent memorial in Redditch town centre, the birthplace of the legendary drummer.

Previously, Mr Whiting raised several hundred pounds for Diabetes UK.
