ALMOST 3,000 responses from residents of a Herefordshire market town detailing how they would like the area they live to improve have been collated.

Ledbury Town Plan volunteers have carried out the painstaking work which features the feedback from questionnaires delivered to every house in the town.

More than one in three town residents responded with suggestions on making the town an even better place to live.

Some of the suggestions are already being put in place including better promotion of Ledbury and plans for town centre improvements.

The findings were put on public display in the Ledbury Town Council offices last Friday and Saturday.

"This was almost like a business plan for Ledbury," said Town Plan volunteer, Nina Shields.

"We asked people what they like about Ledbury, what they would like to see improved and maintained.

"We had a lot of responses, about 2,800, which is really good. We've had tremendous interest.

"We're now looking for volunteers to help make it happen."

She said the suggestions are already bearing fruit with a youth council up-and-running, led by pupils at John Masefield School in the town.

Other feedback included concern over dog mess in the town, the lack of evening trains servicing Ledbury, and the withdrawal of the Citizens Advice Bureau's outreach service.

Volunteer and steering group secretary, Griff Holliday, said: "The (Ledbury) Town Council is already putting a number of our proposals into practice.

"A youth council and drop-in at the Barratt Browning building, better promotion of the town to visitors, action on traffic and parking problems, investment in the recreation ground, plans for town centre improvements, investment in markets and town centre events.

"It’s gratifying to have firm backing for people’s ideas coming forward so quickly."
