TWO pupils from Nunnery Wood High School have been accepted on to the West Mercia police cadets programme.

Year 11 pupils Abigail Stokes and Callum Godwin, who is head boy, will spend time over the next two years finding out about all aspects of policing.

They will shadow officers on shifts, visit dog training units and firearms training centres and gain first aid and public speaking skills.

The scheme is aimed at young people who want to understand policing, develop their spirit of adventures and find out about good citizenship.

Abigail said: “I was shocked and speechless to find out that I had been accepted.

"This is something I have wanted to do since I was five years old. I’m proud of my achievements."

Callum said: "I’m really excited to start my time as a police cadet in September.

"It will be brilliant to experience the challenges and learn new skills, as well as make new friends in the process. "I’m looking forward to working in our local area to help improve our community, such as raising awareness of crime prevention methods and gaining an insight into policing.

"I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in outdoor activities, sports, policing and those who want to make a difference, to consider applying when the opportunity becomes available in Year 11.”

Both students went through an informal interview and an assessment before being selected.

Mark Smith, student support said: “Having served in the police service myself, I know that being part of the police cadets will set the students in good stead, whether they to go into the service or not.”

Head teacher, Steve Powell said: “I’m not surprised that the leadership of these young people have been noticed. "Their success will be an inspiration to the many superb students that Nunnery Wood has.”
