THE council made more than half a million pounds in parking fines last year and the coverage of parking enforcement officers is expected to increase.

Herefordshire Council's parking attendants do not cover every night of the week in the city but the days vary with each week.

The Hereford Times has been told the council plan to add another evening to their week of cover.

The council would not comment on whether this was true but did say that for the tax year 2015 to 2016 they raised £554,000 through parking fines.

Spokesman for the council, said: "Herefordshire Council currently employ 15 (seven part-time) parking enforcement officers covering a range of shifts throughout the county.

"The council continually reviews its parking enforcement operations in response to complaints and contraventions to ensure effective enforcement of the on and off-street parking restrictions that are in place."

She said the purpose of parking enforcement is to encourage motorists to comply with parking regulations.

And added: "Parking regulations assist in the free flow of traffic movement, helping to reduce congestion and improving road safety, while ensuring that designated parking bays such as those reserved for people with disabilities, taxis and goods vehicles are used correctly."
