DOZENS of drivers were forced to wait in queues stretching the width of Asda's car park on Saturday, after two of the four pay stations stopped working.

One shopper from Aston Fields, who wishes to remain anonymous, snapped the 'monster queues' on his phone at around 12.30pm.

He said: "Only two of the four machines were working so people queued from the machines back to the front door and along the side of the building. It was incredible. There must have been between 50 and 100 people in the queue and I was at the back. I was waiting more than 15 minutes to finish parking so the council must have made a fortune out of the extra charges."

Bromsgrove District Council said the exit barriers were raised during peak times in an attempt to ease the backlog of traffic and claimed such an incident is 'very rare'.

A spokesman said: "Unfortunately on Saturday two of four pay stations weren’t working and we were unable to fix them ourselves.

“It is possible to operate the car park, for a short period, with two machines but as it was a Saturday afternoon, at times, there were a lot of shoppers - hence the queues."

The council has apologised to customers for the delays and confirmed that all machines are now working.
