AN historic city centre road looks set to be closed for a week after a sinkhole opened up.
The 10cm wide hole outside Beautiful Flowers in New Street has appeared due to a sewer collapse.
Ashley Norton, civil site engineer for Severn Trent said: "We've had no option but to close the street as a safety precaution and it looks as though it's going to have stay closed for the week."
"We don't know how wide the collapse is yet but the sewer is 3.5m deep and we cannot allow a car to go down the road because it may open it up further.
"We've closed it off for now and we can start digging tomorrow morning so we can see how bad it is."
Andrew Christian-Brooks, of newstreetworcester.co.uk said: "They've put barriers up at one end by where it meets Friar Street, near the Eagle Vaults.
"They've put tape up and Severn Trent Water are here and there are two men looking at it.
"There's a safety barrier around it and someone from the council.
"They said it would probably take an hour but I think it may be longer than that."
Sarah Scott, who was passing by, said: "It looked like a 10cm hole on the top but I could see the service pipes and a large space underneath."
