A COUNCIL has decided that members must stand before speaking in meetings, unless they are unable to do so for physical reasons.

Cllr Graham Francis said: "I'm delighted to move this proposal.

"It's far easier for a member to be heard by other members and by the public.

"It's a physical reminder that the member speaking has the floor."

Cllr Francis said members acknowledge the authority of the Mayor when they are standing.

Cllr Andrea Morgan added: "I think it's something that should be brought back.

"It's much easier for members of the parish to hear and understand what we are saying...and it stops people from interrupting.

"I'd also like to see the Mayor wear his chain in meetings."

However, Cllr Henrietta Ross raised the point that one of the council's standing orders would have to be suspended in order to push the motion through.

Councillors therefore voted to pause standing order 25B and approved the proposal for councillors to stand while speaking at meetings.

The council made the decision at its meeting on April 17.
