A PRICELESS collection of memorabilia has been saved from the skip.

There were fears that the extensive Kays Heritage Group archive, consisting of over 100 years of history from Worcester's now obsolete Kays catalogue company, would be thrown away after the company that stored it decided it could no longer help.

Fortunately, another Worcester business has stepped in to fill the breach and the artefacts - ranging from catalogues and photographs, to newspaper cuttings and pieces of furniture - will soon be moving home.

Kirk Akdemir, managing director of international translation service company AA Global Language Services Ltd, has offered to store the collection at his company offices in Blockhouse Close, Worcester city centre.

"Preserving our history is very important to me and I knew that I could help the Kays Heritage Group, so I offered my support to them," said Mr Akdemir.

Bernard Mills, chairman of the Kays Heritage Group, said: "I'm very pleased that the collection is now able to be stored securely until a more permanent home can be found. The group is very grateful to Mr Akdemir for his support".

Given the multi-millions Kays bosses made from the city, surely they could have set up a suitable store - with public access.

Thank you, Worcester News for running this good news story.
In reply to Luke - the "bosses" of Littlewoods Shop Direct, who now own the Kays brand, have shown little enough interest in preserving historic buildings that were once part of Kays in Worcester such as the Cinderella pavilion and have now partly demolished the historic "Midland" office on the Bransford Road warehouse site, that their only interest is in making a profit by asset stripping what was Kays. They have little time or inclination it seems to support anything that does not generate a profit.

Even better is for local people to ask their local authorities to specify exactly what are they doing to preserve the heritage of Worcester. Given that we have lost many of the famous names of businesses and manufacturing in the city, ask where are the displays and archives preserved of those companies?

Even better, ask your prospective local councillor to commit to doing somethng positive to preserve the local history when they get elected, before you place your "X" against their name in the forthcoming local elections.

Kay's building record in the City has been an absolute disgrace, headed by the dreadful building which totally destroys the welcoming views over the City which passengers used to enjoy. It must raise questions about how they got round the planners at the time.
