Friends and family raise funds in memory of popular plumber

FRIENDS and family of a much-missed Worcester plumber who died suddenly last month are raising money in his memory.

Martin Fox died from a blood clot in his heart, aged just 58. He was found at his home in Middle Drive, St John's, on Monday, June 15, hours after he had left work early complaining of indigestion.

Friends from the Brunswick Arms, Malvern Road, where Mr Fox was a regular, had gone round to the house after Mr Fox failed to turn up to a crib club meeting.

Now, those friends and his brother have come together to celebrate Mr Fox's life and set up a memorial fund in his name.

They want to raise £5,000 to buy life-saving equipment for Worcestershire Royal Hospital's cardiology unit.

The fund-raising will start tomorrow with a northern soul memorial night.

Chris Hankins, landlord of the Brunswick, said it would be a fitting tribute to Mr Fox, a former DJ and avid fan of the music.

He said: “Martin was a genuinely kind and generous man with many, many friends from both his social life and professional life as a well-respected plumber and electrician.

“His van was a familiar sight on the streets of Worcester. He had his picture in the Worcester News earlier this year for being the most generous donor at a fund-raising  event at the Brunswick in aid of the Worcester First Responders, which raised well over £1,200.

“He was such a well-known, well-liked guy. He'll be missed.”

There is a collection bucket on the pub bar and ticket sales from the disco will be donated to the memorial fund. There are also plans to hold a curry night in honour of Mr Fox, with his brother Keith Fox – who has become a Brunswick regular with his wife Catherine – as the guest chef.

On top of his love for music, Mr Fox enjoyed crib. His firm was the sole sponsor of the Worcester and District Crib League and he was team captain for the Brunswick Arms crib team.

Last season he led them to the top of the second division. The day he died he was due to meet fellow members to discuss the best way to spend their prize money.

Entry to the northern soul disco will be £5.
